All high level languages are compiled into machine language of course, it's just a question of when that happens. In the V8 engine it is done "just-in-time" (JIT) like the Java JVM, but this is still most likely not as fast as "ahead of time" (AOT) compilation so it will usually lose out to an AOT compiled program like RPG or COBOL. I say usually because I'm lead to believe by someone that should know, that the Java JVM is so advanced now that it can optimise code on the fly according to how it's being used and can therefore equal or outperform some AOT compiled code, but I don't think the Node V8 engine is that sophisticated although I don't know that much about it.

Hard to believe that a technology that is interpreted at its heart would outperform compiled programs.

JavaScript is supposed to be compiled to machine language by the V8 engine in Node.JS. Can't run any faster than machine language.

Is this not true for the IBM i?

Again, I'm not saying CGI is a bad decision. I'm sure it works perfectly fine in many cases.

If a company wants to handle very high volumes of concurrent requests quickly (think Walmart, eBay, PayPal or Amazon Brand Stores), then node may perform better than CGI. We would like to choose the technology that can better handle any amount of growth.

You could create web services using COBOL (or RPG) as well, if that's the main programing language.

Easily send JSON (or XML. blech...) data back to the requestor. All you'd really need is YAJL or something similar.
