Domino clustering works almost flawlessly for us and has so for many
years.
We have 32 servers in our cluster (mixed windows, Solaris and i5/OS, with
over 5TB of Domino data clustered.
It is easy to create multiple replicas available on multiple servers via
ADMINP.
The key to failover for client applications is the catalog.nsf and the
cldbir.nsf. Access to database and servers in the cluster
can be controlled. For very busy apps or servers you can also add multiple
cluster replicator jobs.
For HTTP we use a cisco load balancer CSM which also makes High
Availability a cinch.

So far we only have been able to contemplate the IBM clustering approach.
Has anyone been able to implement this or other kind of alternative and
make recomendations.
We would like to perform a swich-over in case of failure and have all our
users up 24/7

I've implemented a Domino cluster on two Windows boxes that works well.
Domino clustering is not hardware specific however, an iSeries can cluster
with another iSeries or with a Linux box or other hardware/OS.
Depending on DASD requirements, a lower cost solution to evaluate the
effectiveness of a Domino cluster might be to configure a Linux box and
create a cluster with your iSeries.
