what kind of modem and how is it configured.  for sync comms on the options
by ibm modem there is either a dip switch or front panel switch to set
sync/async.  for a uds modem (v3229 or v3400) use factory option #9, for a
uds v3225, use factory option 3, but you need to change the dialer type to
SDLC.
