>>i.e. If I am using a vendor version that is no longer supported, I
implicitly get what I get, is no surprise these days and within reason.
However, if I am a current maintenance contract, I am obviously
supported or paying a stealth fee for an unsupportable product. Is it an
industry standard that maintenance does not include a license transfer,
something that is sure to happen to 100% of customers at some point?
....
It seems to me that before purchasing any product, somewhere along the
line, every buyer should always ask the question, how easy is it to
execute an exit strategy from this product?
Of course it's against the makers' interests, in a way, but at least the
more this question is put, the more it can become a selling point.
And eventually, some vendor might even pick up on it (one can hope and
dream anyway), and brag about how their stuff is so good they make it
easy to exit...
