Aside from the due diligence of product evaluation, if you take a best of breed approach to software selection, you may be more likely to retain it after your requirements or other software components change.

For us, TrustedLink was a good solution 10 years ago, but it's no longer a good fit as one of our target applications (SAP) no longer resides on the "i". If instead we chose Gentrans at the time, we could have migrated to GIS (these products share map formats).
