There is a way to check without bringing up all the lpars. But, it
involves having IBM on site to enter this super secret password to get
into a particular part of the ASMI. At least the way my local CE
explained it to me (with supplied IBM documentation).

If you connect this cable up and power up does it matter whether your in
manual or normal mode?? If you connect the cable and power up into
restricted mode can you do any checking to make sure it is working prior
to
finishing the remainder of the IPL.

I think the last thing you want to do is reset your FSP. That is a last
resort action only used when the HMC and FSP loose communications.
While not that hard, also not advised unless you have done it before.
The FSP goes back to factory reset when you do that. You would have to
reset all of the passwords and network communications for the HMC/FSP.
Again not hard and I have done it many times, but know what your in for
first. Also, the "pin hole" is in different locations depending on the
system. For instance on a P5 550 you have to take all the power
supplies, fans, etc out to get at the little dip switch that resets the
FSP. That's only one version. Where is it on your box? IBM has been
consistently inconsistent with the location of the reset. Don't even
talk about dual FSPs. I think you get the point. If that's what you
need to do, it's best to get your IBM CE to help, or Larry, me, Pete,
etc......
Was the UPS cable from IBM? There are a few different part numbers but
they are all the same cable. My guess is there was not enough powered
off time for the change to take.

effect.that? Is there a negative ramification with that? Like, total
reconfiguration?
Sure miss how easy it was on AS/400's! I submitted a DCR to that
move

midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx I tried that last week with no luck.
Spent $87 on that little cable. Which arrived on it's own truck from
Towne Freight. Plugged in cable and UPS. Powered off all lpars.
Powered off system. Physically removed power cables from system. Drank
a tea. Put cables back in. Powered up system. Powered up all lpars.
Unplugged power cable to UPS. No message on any lpar. Rob Berendt

midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx Yep. All 8 partitions get the message
simultaneously. The FSP gets the message and passes it up the food
chain. To get the FSP to 'see' the UPS you do need to power down cold
(plugs pulled) then connect the UPS Cable, then power it all back up.
