There should be no important data or settings in the profile anyway.
So why worry?

Roaming profiles do not replace backups. They should be limited to a
very small size, e.G. 20-50MB. This will keep logon times short. All
directories that could contain data (e.g. the Documents library)
should be redirected using folder redirection.

While it is true that settings can be lost in such cases (especially
if he signs on to other machines during this time), if you implemented
roaming profiles properly this should not have any bigger
consequences.
