I have the version that only uses Wifi, it does not have a separate on 
line account.  The Wifi hooked up to my secured network in nothing flat 
and connects seamlessly every time I turn it on.  I don' t leave it on 
to conserve battery.  I usually will allow it to go into sleep mode 
rather than turn it off and the battery lasts about a week between 
recharges.  I read about 600 pages a week on it so you can gauge your 
own battery use.  The really cool think about the nook is it only uses 
battery when the screen changes, or the Wifi is on.

I have think you can tether the device to your PC to upload books in the 
absence of Wifi but I have not tried is since my house is well covered 
with WiFi, (my own).
