Hmm...so it sounds like a Windows Update broke the manfacturer-supplied
driver, if I understand correctly. I'd probably go with my prior
suggestion to install the available updates individually (or in small
sets) to see which one triggers the failure. Then remove that one and
exclude it from future update suggestions.

This happened even before I loaded the first Windows update. It happened
when I first loaded the drivers that came with the motherboard. I loaded
them all at once, rebooted, and that's when it first happened. I reverted
to before the install, installed them one at a time and rebooted.
Everything was good until I ran Windows Update and then it happened again.
I reverted and things were OK for awhile and then it quit on its own
without installing anything.

Friday night I did some searching and found someone else with a similar
problem. The "solution" was to delete the device and reboot. When I did
that Windows installed a generic device. That had no problems all weekend
long but because it was generic it wouldn't let me set a screen saver. We
had to turn off the monitor manually when not in use. That was good
enough to let me restore my wife's documents and e-mail. She needs to use
it and I'm tired of messing with it without making any progress so maybe I
should just buy a card to stick in and disable the motherboard video.
