Microsoft SAM: Spend Astronomical Money.
It's good if you have control over when and who is buying (installing)
software and building servers and desktop/laptops. Then in the end of the
day you get right with M$ by writing them a check. Very above board and
keeps the lawyers happy. BUT if you don't have good control over the
software copies (source ISOs etc) and there are folks just installing at
will, then it can get ornery (read expensive) really quick.

When that happened here a few years back we were very close to going to an
all Linux desktop. That never materialized but we seriously had a bad taste
in our mouth. We try to do what's right. I'll grant you that it wasn't
always this way. There used to be an attitude that if they had one legal
copy of Excel per plant that was enough to put it on the rest of the
computers at that plant. Management's changed. I'll admit, I raised my
objection but did as I was told. Again, that was many years ago. Now if we
don't like the terms and conditions we shop elsewhere.
