True enough John.  SAM is Microsoft's way to try and mitigate those types of
problems.  My issue with it is more that you should pay as you go, rather
than wait for a catch up check to get cut.  I guess it's death by a thousand
cuts vs. a broadside sword in the end that has to be the choice.

Honestly, though, if you don't have control over your software
distribution/installation process you've got more problems to address.
While it isn't sexy, asset & configuration management needs to be a priority
in more IT shops.  You can't manage it if you don't even know you have it.
