We installed Zend CORE for the PHP, and their version of MySQL, then
upgraded the MySQL with a download from the MySQL website to get the most
recent build. It seems to be working great. it is serving the website
FlyRacing.com, and with no errors. This allowed us to move the site off of a
linux server to the IBM i.

When we installed the Zend Core on our iSeries, there was an option to
install MySQL as well. This may not be exactly what you are seeking. But
it is another way to get MySQL on the iSeries for free.
