As I understand it, IBM has their own implementation (J9) of Java, but under
license from Sun/Oracle.

Also note that rumour has it that the IBM licensing of Java is closely
related to the sudden change of mind of IBM from Apache Harmony to OpenJDK.

I can perfectly well live with OpenJDK 6 being the version living in the
wild for the coming decades.  There is very little change in the JVM, but a
lot in the libraries, and Java 6 is not a bad platform.

Oracle wants to stop embedded Java appliances, like Android phones. 
  This has zero to do with servers or desktops.  Because if Oracle 
really wants to play the "no implementation but ours" game on servers, 
they'll have a fun fight with IBM.

There's a LOT more smoke here than fire.
